This collection centres on The Last of Us (2013–) franchise. The first of these critically-acclaimed videogames tells the story of Joel and Ellie, two survivors of an apocalyptical plague that has turned North Americans (at least) into zombified ‘infected’. The second game picks up Ellie’s story five years later to explore themes of revenge and violence. The games are rich in terms of narrative, aesthetics, and ethical complexity. They are also immensely popular – and, in some respects, controversial. In this collection, an interdisciplinary group of scholars explores The Last of Us, and considers what it might mean for their disciplines to engage seriously with gaming.
